	Engineer Alan Warrington is more used to saving lives than to people helping him. But after volunteers came to his aid, he is now backing the Leicester Mercury and St John Ambulance campaign to encourage people to learn first aid. Karl Hayes, a first aid volunteer at Barwell St John Ambulance, is also a community first responder who is trained to give emergency care until an ambulance arrives. 	Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka Better Prepared for Future Tsunamis
	Vulnerable coastal communities in Sri Lanka now have more tools to help them survive tsunamis, cyclones, and other rapid-onset natural disasters. This increased preparedness flows from IDRC-supported research that evaluated the best means of alerting communities to approaching danger. Sarvodaya set up an information hub near the capital, Colombo, capable of sending bulletins to remote communities. "Guardians" there would be ready to receive the information. Community emergency committees were also trained to maintain the equipment and mobilize residents for evacuation if a warning came.

	Sri Lanka: Army Troops Assist Medical Services in Hospitals, Particularly Emergency Services
	Members of the Army serving the Security Force Headquarters, Central (SFHQ-C) at the request of hospital authorities at Kandy General Hospital, Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, Nuwara Eliya Base Hospital and Debarawewa Hospital volunteered and provided skeletal medical services when minor staff in those hospitals struck work on 30 July.\r\nArmy personnel of the 11 Division on the directions of its General Officer Commanding assisted the routine administration of the Kandy, Peradeniya and Nuwara Eliya hospitals, particularly in relation to emergency and essential services.

	Sri Lanka: Fire Fighting and Emergency Rescue Vehicles Donated
	A Japanese delegation donated a fire fighting and an emergency rescue vehicle to the Sri Lanka Army on August 05 Tuesday. The delegation handed over the documents to the vehicles to Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. GotabayaRajapaksa during a ceremony at the ministry.\r\nThe vehicles are worth about Rs. 120 million.

	Sri Lanka: New Helicopter Launched for Domestic Air Services, Can be used for Ambulance Services
	Daya Aviation, one of the Daya Group’s subsidiaries, has introduced a brand new Airbus Helicopter EC130T2 to Sri Lanka, making it one of the largest helicopters available in the country for commercial services to the country. It can accommodate seven passengers including the pilot. Its services can be obtained by local as well as foreign tourists.It was revealed at this function that the helicopter can be used for news coverage, taking photographs and recording video footages and for ambulance service.
