Hong Kong: US$100m Ebola Emergency Response Plan Unveiled by WHO\'s Margaret Chan


The World Health Organisation is launching a US$100 million response plan to combat an \"unprecedented\" outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, director general Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun said on 31 July. Chan will meet in Conakry, Guinea on 1 August with the presidents of affected West African nations to take the response against the disease to \"a new level\". Hong Kong: Hong Kong Govt Urged to Review Future Ambulance Services as Population Ages


Patients\' rights groups are calling on the government to review the city\'s ambulance services to ensure they are capable of meeting the burgeoning demands of the city in the future.\r\n\"There is a concern that while the population is growing and there are more cars on the street, there may be a need to keep an eye on the ambulance response times,\" said Alex Lam Chi-yau, vice-chairman of the Alliance of Patients\' Organisations. In the past 5 years, the number of calls for ambulances has increased by almost 90,000. To meet the demand the city has added 100 more ambulances to its fleet with 300 more officers and frontline staff.

Hong Kong: Emergency Procedures for Schools to be Reviewed Following Tragedy of 10-year-old Pupil


The Education Bureau will review guidelines for schools in handling emergencies after staff at a primary in Kwai Chung where a 10-year-old girl fell to her death failed to call 999 right away. Staff at CCC Kei Chun Primary School instead called paramedic St John Ambulance. Hong Kong: Public Hospital A&E Patients Top 6,000 a Day


Accident and emergency (A&E) services at public hospitals are under serious stress, as the number of people using them each day has surpassed 6,000, Headline Daily reported Wednesday (December 30).\r\nA total of 6,315 people sought help at A&E departments Monday (December 28), it said. Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long and Caritas Medical Centre in Cheung Sha Wan received patients 10 percent beyond their capacity, and patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei exceeded its capacity by over 20 percent.

Hong Kong: Emergency ward fees could double as officials look to reduce hospital overcrowding during flu season


Patients using emergency services at public hospitals could be asked to pay HK$200 – double the current fee – under a plan being considered by the Hospital Authority to address overcrowding caused by flu. It would be the first increase since the authority began charging for services in 2002. The HK$100 charge introduced then has not changed in 14 years.\r\nThe plan came after an unprecedented surge in demand for treatment through winter, during which flu pushed the number of daily visits well above the average of around 6,000 to an alarming height of 7,000.
