	Public distrust of the government has grown considerably over the past couple of weeks over its handling of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster. To more effectively deal with future crises, President Park Geun-hye announced on April 29 that a new ministry would be launched under the purview of the prime minister's office. 	For nearly 1 hour, hundreds of students were waiting to be rescued from the ferry Sewol after the first distress call was sent, but the precious “golden time”, when significant rescue efforts could have been made was wasted, according to video clips retrieved from the mobile phones of the teenagers. On top of the irresponsible captain Lee Joon-seok, the Coast Guard’s inept initial response is further enraging many people who believe that many more people could have been saved if the Coast Guard had reacted more efficiently and swiftly.

	President Park Geun-hye, who is soon expected to apologize to the nation for the government's failure to prevent the recent ferry disaster, continued discussing related matters with her Cabinet on May 13 Tuesday. Referring to similar discussions she had with senior secretaries over the weekend, President Park asked Cabinet members for their ideas on laying the groundwork for a national emergency response system. After apologizing directly to the people, the president will give details of a new master plan to bolster national safety and a new ministry to oversee emergency response and management.

	South Korean President Park Geun-hye made an official apology once again for one of the country's deadliest maritime disaster on May19 Monday, vowing a reform in officialdom. Park said the coast guard's rescue operations actually failed in the ferry sinking accident, noting that after much contemplation, she reached a conclusion that the coast guard will be disbanded. 	Korea (North): Emergency Hotlines to Be Rationalized This Year
	Some 20 emergency hotlines will be merged into three numbers next year -- 112 (crimes), 119 (disaster and rescue), 110 (other matters), the Ministry of Public Safety and Security announced on 27 January. \r\nThe measure had been discussed since June last year in the wake of the deadly ferry disaster and aims to make the whole system more efficient.
