India: GOPIO to Honour AmeriCares India Charity


Washington, April 6 (IANS) The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) has selected AmeriCares, the non-profit global health and disaster relief organization, for its Service to India Award on April 20. Three Indian Americans will also be honoured for service to the community and/or India or the society at large, according to a GOPIO release. In 2006, AmeriCares deepened its commitment to India by establishing a local presence in Mumbai. AmeriCares India today responds to emergency medical needs and delivers medical aid to health care providers in 26 Indian states and union territories.

India: AP CM Opens Centralised 'Dial-100' Emergency Response Centre


Hyderabad: A centralised system on the lines of an emergency response agency like '911' in the United States was launched in Andhra Pradesh on April 12 to enable the police reach complainant within minutes.Under the 'Dial 100' project, the AP police department has partnered with GVK EMRI to build and operate a unified command and control centre for the entire state.  The integrated 'Dial 100' centre would also co-ordinate other emergency services like medical, fire and other disaster-related response services. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who inaugurated the centralised 'Dial-100' system as an "Ugadi (Telugu New Year) gift"

India: Kashmir Hospital Gets Critical Care Facility


Srinagar: A year after the high number of infant deaths rocked Kashmir, LallaDed Maternity Hospital, the Valley's most busy women and children hospital, has now got an intensive care unit facility for better patient care. The 3-bedded intensive care unit (ICU) unit was inaugurated by Minister for Medical Education TajMohi-ud-Din on April 11 yesterday, an official spokesman said. The Minister also inaugurated the extended ward of the labour room, which has added newly furbished 16 beds to the labour room of the hospital, the spokesman said.

Kochi: The site where the St. Augustine’s Church collapsed at Aroor on,April 8, Monday could not have been more chaotic, a testimony to how ill-equipped Ernakulam and Alappuzha districts were in dealing with such a disaster. According to standard disaster management protocol, an accident of this magnitude warranted a specialised Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) team, comprising personnel proficient in entering disaster sites and carrying out rescue operations.
