Philippines: Cebu LGUs Train for Disaster Preparedness


Cebu: Fourteen local government units (LGUs) of the Province of Cebu representing the first batch of Training of Trainers (ToT) on disaster preparedness that was conducted recently by the Corporate Network for Disaster Response (CNDR) in Cebu City under the ‘Noah’s Ark Project’.  The Noah’s Ark Project is a community-based initiative of the CNDR and it aims to beef up the capacity of high-risk barangays and sitios to deal with disasters particularly floods, to reduce their vulnerabilities.

Philippines: Laoag PNP, Disaster Team on Full Alert for Holy Week


Laoag City: The Laoag City police have started keeping watch of the city’s peace and order in line with the observance of the Holy Week. Police Supt. Jeffrey Gorospe, city PNP chief, said uniformed policemen have been deployed around destination areas where droves of tourists usually flock.  “We have established motorists' assistance posts in main tourist destinations such as in Fort Ilocandia in Barangay Calayab and Sand Dunes in Barangay La Paz,” Gorospe said.  He said the police are also keeping tab of motorists’ assistance calls in emergency situations.

Philippines: DOH Unveils New Hospital Buildings in Romblon Including Emergency Rooms and ICU


Health Secretary Enrique T Ona led the inauguration of several hospital buildings in Romblon that would be managed by the provincial government under Gov. Eduardo C Firmalo, a physician by profession. Firmalo, Vice  Gov. Jose R Riano and Rep. Eleandro Jesus F Madrona joined Ona open the new facilities of the hospital, including the emergency room and intensive care unit, the 2-story building serving as patients’ wards, surgery and obstetrics, out-patient department, x-ray an additional offices for hospital staff.

Philippines: Duterte Urged to Use Aerial Drones for Disaster Emergency Response


Davao City: The chief of the city’s Public Security and Safety Command Center (PSSCC) here has drones for emergency response situations after testing a unit a week after the April 4-5 fire that hit two barangays in Isla Verde. Duterte, he said, would be the one to decide if the city can afford drones and whether to use the device recommended to Mayor Rodrigo Duterte the use of aerial drones as a tool in disaster and emergency response. PSSCC chief Francisco Villaroman said he has proposed to the city government to invest in aerial as a regular unit of the city’s Central 911 emergency response system.

Philippines: Health Department Declares Public Emergency


Cebu /Iloilo City: The Department of Health (DoH) has declared a public health emergency to compel travellers from the Middle East to submit to quarantine and testing for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS-CoV). Department Order Number 001-2014, signed by Health Secretary Enrique T Ona on April 21 Monday, urged DoH agencies “to apprehend, detain/isolate, or place under active or passive surveillance individuals who may been exposed to the MERS-CoV infection and considered as dangerous contact.” The same order, which was issued upon the recommendation of the Bureau of Quarantine, specified that the DoH will w
