	Philippines: Volunteers Shortage Hampers Ambulance Support for Small Towns
	Dozens of small communities rely on just under 1,500 volunteers because their communities are too small to sustain having paid paramedics. The shortage is a problem for areas of the Murraylands and south-east. In Swan Reach on the Murray, there are five volunteers but five more are needed. "A majority of the stations in the country are manned by volunteers, so therefore the more we can get the better it will be," Terry Whales of the SA Ambulance Service said. Locals worry they may end up reliant on ambulance crews which are long distances from their small communities.

	Philippines: Lanao Norte Emergency Response Units Trained on Water Search and Rescue
	Lagawe, Ifugao: The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) in the province has launched its 3-year community based disaster risk reduction project last February 8 Saturday here. The launching of the project, known as Empowering Communities and Government Institutions to Replicate and Consolidate Inclusive Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction, was attended by PRC volunteers, provincial and municipal officials of the two pilot towns. By the end of the project, 85% of the directly targeted households can at least correctly identify relevant natural hazards, climate change risks, and potential disaster impact and explain the implication

	Philippines: CVMC Inaugurates Upgraded Emergency Room
	Tuguegarao City: Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC) here has inaugurated its newly upgraded emergency room on February 18. Dr. Emmanuel Acluba, chief of hospital, said the project costs P14 million which is part of the P44 million Hospital Facility Enhancement Program (HFEP) of the Department of Health for CVMC. He added that the emergency room has now built-in oxygen and wirings, with enough beds for patients, air-conditioned room, and well trained medical doctors, nurses and other employees.

	Philippines: CAAP Acquires 41 Aircraft Rescue, Fire-fighting Vehicles
	Manila: In a unanimous decision, the board of directors of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) approved the acquisition of 41 brand new units of industrial type airport rescue firefighting vehicles. The new fire trucks called Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle (ARFF) are expected to improve the firefighting capability of major commercial airports in the country. They were certified by an independent international 3rd party that said the product meets and exceeds all National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), FAA and ICAO international standards for aircraft and rescue fighting.

	Philippines: Alarm Sounded About Lack of Healthcare Providers
	For Dr Bien Nillos, being healthcare provider in an environment with limited resources is a challenge. As part of Doctors to the Barrios (DTTB) Batch 23, Nillos was assigned as municipal health officer in Candoni, Negros Occidental, from 2007 to 2009, serving around 27,000 people scattered across a wide area which only has a small dilapidated rural health unit.
