India: MBBS Students to Take Course in Emergency Care


Bangalore: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) is introducing a subject on Comprehensive Emergency Care and Life Support (ECLS) in the undergraduate medicine curriculum from the current academic year. RGUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr K S Sriprakash said here on June 20 that students need to undergo training in this during their internship.To teach them, RGUHS will organise a training programme for selected faculties of medical colleges across the state in association with the University of Utah, USA. The training will be held from June 23 to 27.

India: Professor Develops ĄŻBore-well RobotĄŻ to Rescue Children


Madurai: Whenever a child falls into an open bore-well, the first emergency call is made to the fire and rescue services. And, the first person the fire and rescue services personnel turn to is M Manikandan, a 43-year-old college professor who runs the Madurai Rescue Team.  The robotic arms, or ’bore-well robot’, developed by Manikandan and 2 of his friends has also been used outside Tamil Nadu.

India: Most Trauma Patients Reach AIIMS in Autos


New Delhi: The majority of patients arriving at AIIMS Trauma Center, the apex body for emergency care in the country, are brought in auto-rickshaws, not ambulances or even PCR vans. The chilling fact, emerging from an analysis of patient data, shows even the critically-ill fail to receive basic life support in the capital city, which reports more than 10,000 road accident deaths every year.

India: Brachial Plexus Injuries on Rise with Severe Road Accidents


Indore: Increasing road accidents are resulting into brachial plexus injuries. In simple words, severe road accidents lead to complete loss of function of hand due to paralysis which is often left undiagnosed or get neglected due to non-availability of treatment. Doctors advised that the injuries should not be left untreated which could result in permanent loss.  City doctors said that brachial plexus injuries are seen as part of high velocity trauma and most of the patients are young adult males who are the earning members of their families.

India: Medical Officers to Quit En Masse on July 1


Nagpur: Medical officers across the state have decided to resign en masse on Doctors' Day that falls on July 1. Two of them, Dr Rajesh Gaikwad and Dr Pramod Rakshamwar, will also start a hunger strike at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, on the same day. This is being done because the government has failed to keep its promise about fulfilling some of their demands. Around 12,000 doctors from the state, including 3,500 from Vidarbha, who are members of Maharashtra Association for Gazetted Medical Officers (MAGMO) had gone on a strike earlier this month.
