India: Airports Put on Alert for MERS Cases


NEW DELHI: India has increased surveillance at international airports and ports to prevent the entry of a deadly virus that has claimed 45 lives across the world so far. The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was first reported in September 2012 in Saudi Arabia but has since spread to several countries including France, United Kingdom and Italy. The disease is related to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that claimed hundreds of lives in 2002-03, and its symptoms are similar to H1N1 or Swine flu. India: Centre to Set up Rs.150-crore Hospital in Madurai


Madurai: Talks are on to set up a multi-specialty hospital in Madurai. With an outlay of about Rs.150 crore, the project will be a joint venture between the Central and State governments. The new healthcare institution, which is described as an "upgraded hospital", is likely to come up at Madurai Medical College Ground in the city. The project is expected to take off in two months and construction work will be completed in two years. Once the new facility is ready, it will function in tandem with the Trauma Care Centre of the GRH which is situated close by. India: Free Ambulance Service in all Districts by December, Pact Inked


Bhubaneswar: The state government on July 16 Tuesday signed an MoU with Ziqitza Health Care, a Mumbai-based private ambulance service provider, for expansion of the free emergency ambulance service to 15 more districts. As many as 140 more ambulances will run in these districts by December this year, taking the total in the state to 420, a government statement said. Health secretary P K Mohapatra and Ziqitza CEO Sweta Mangal inked the deal. India: Free Treatment for Accident Victims from July 29


New Delhi: A pilot project of a scheme to provide cashless treatment for those injured in road accidents will be launched on the busy Delhi-Gurgaon-Jaipur national highway on July 29. The Centre selected the 225-km highway to launch the scheme as it is one of the most accident-prone stretches in the country, claiming about 250 lives annually. India: Workers' Strike Pulls 108 Services off the Road


Vishakhapatnam: Patients across the state are in for a harrowing time with the 108 emergency services going off the road from July 19 Friday due to indefinite strike call given by employees following a standoff with the GVKEMRI management over a wage hike. Each 108 ambulance handles over 7 to 8 cases on a daily basis, which means that nearly 1200 cases on a daily basis may go unattended in the North Coastal Andhra districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari till the strike continues.
