Health Department Declares Public Emergency

Cebu /Iloilo City: The Department of Health (DoH) has declared a public health emergency to compel travellers from the Middle East to submit to quarantine and testing for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS-CoV).

Department Order Number 001-2014, signed by Health Secretary Enrique T Ona on April 21 Monday, urged DoH agencies “to apprehend, detain/isolate, or place under active or passive surveillance individuals who may been exposed to the MERS-CoV infection and considered as dangerous contact.”

The same order, which was issued upon the recommendation of the Bureau of Quarantine, specified that the DoH will work together with law enforcement and the National Disaster Risk Reduction Office (NDRRMO) in its implementation. A copy of the order was furnished to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Allan LM Purisima.
