Ill-equipped to Treat Snakebite Cases

Nepalgunj: Incidents of snakebite are going unabated in various Tarai districts particularly in the summer and rainy seasons, necessitating efficient medical response. But it threatens the lives of patients when they don’t get timely and adequate attention.

Unavailability of antivenom on time and a lack of facilities such as intensive care unit and ventilator, coupledwith patient’s dependence on witch doctors, further complicate the matter. As hospitals receive an increasing number of patients ofsnakebite mostly during mid-April to mid-October every year, it seems no concrete measures have been taken to control the problem.
