Ambulances Gear Up for Speed

Chennai: Ramshackle white vans with meek beacons have given way to four-wheel drive vehicles outfitted with flashing lights, wailing sirens and a range of medical equipment. To keep up with the rise in calls and ensure better first aid, ambulances are being loaded with gadgets and gear. The state government has ordered 78 four-wheel drive (4WD) vans to take medical help faster to people living in hilly regions. It will get 29 new neonatal ambulances, and has roped in IIT Madras to make modifications to the vehicles to increase efficiency, reduce vibration and improve the ride.
