Rawalpindi: The snakebite cases in the region are alarmingly on the rise at least for the last 3 weeks while the healthcare facilities in public sector in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad received over 120 snakebite victims in last two months.

Almost all reported cases of snakebites in need of anti-snake venom serum (ASV) were given serum at the healthcare facilities including Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and allied hospitals in Rawalpindi however at least four of the reported cases died of bleeding and or shock in result of snakebites.

Medical Specialist at PIMS Dr. Muhammad Haroon informed ‘The News’ that the healthcare facilities in twin cities have been receiving heavy influx of snakebite victims this year and a number of victims had to be kept in the intensive care units at PIMS, Polyclinic and in allied hospitals in Rawalpindi. He said that in cases of snakebites, the most important thing is to create awareness among public about first aid treatment of a victim as after receiving snakebite, the healthcare facility arranges ASV by any means and provides necessary treatment to the victim.
